The MPNS Coaching Culture Development Programme

How does it work?

Before embarking upon this programme it will be important for the Headteacher and Senior leaders to assess the readiness of their organisation. We have found that where this has been conducted, the outcomes are always strong.

The programme itself consists of four phases.

Phase 1: A two day session for Senior leaders working together (in schools this would normally be Head and Deputy) exploring how coaching works and practical experience of the MPNS 'MIND' model of coaching.
We always demonstrate the 'MIND' model in 'real' time and with a client who has been through the programme themselves. In this way the coaching process is demonstrated in reality - there is no role play involved.

We also ensure that phases one and three are conducted in venues that have an environment that supports high quality learning and engagement.

Phase 2: 'Live' coaching practice with a colleague who attended Phase 1.

Phase 3: A one day session to debrief the 'live' coaching experience, to delve deeper into the skills of listening and questioning and to prepare for Phase 4.

Phase 4: A one day work place INSET session to support the Senior leaders  (who have been engaged in the programme) to introduce the MPNS 'MIND' Model to their staff. This day is facilitated by MPNS Associates who will also provide a client to demonstrate the MIND model in real time (as in phase 1)
.

Through experience we have found that the outcomes for participants are better when every face-to-face session is facilitated by more than one facilitator. All our sessions have at least two      (usually three) facilitators. As a result, participants have the benefit of a range of styles and approaches to support their learning. Additionally this also ensures that a broader range of experience can be brought to bear to every group we work with.

How can I become involved?

  • This particular programme relates well to succession planning in schools
  • MPNS have worked in partnership with Local Authority officers to deliver this programme to a targeted number of schools
  • We have also delivered the programme where schools have come together as a  collaborative group
  • We believe our programme to be unique as it truly supports the development of a coaching culture (see Evaluation Report)

The Impact of the programme

  • Head Teachers report increased confidence when working with their colleagues as there is a shared understanding within the school that leaders are not there to provide all the answers, leading to a healthy, professional culture
  • Middle leaders report the increase in their skills using a coaching approach has helped develop the effectiveness of their overall leadership and the effectiveness of their teams
  • One Head Teacher has stated that this programme has provided the foundation for the development of a 'Guided Learning' approach to the work conducted with the pupils in the school

How much would it cost?

Typically, the cost per school for the whole programme would be approximately £3000 - £4000 (assuming a viable cohort of between 6 - 9 schools). This would cover the Head Teacher and Deputy attending the three day taught element of the programme and the school based INSET day (fourth day). This price also includes all venue costs etc. for the three day taught progamme. There are no hidden costs.
